Being able to account for all inputs and outputs, and to be able to compare teacher A with teacher B, cohort A with cohort B, and so on. I am not sure that this is the only reason to count, but it is certainly a reason. In the US this falls under the heading of "accountability" (which seems like a weasel word in education circles).Apostolos K.
