I think that there is learning in games...Hi Irene,

I think that there is learning in games, how much and how useful it is in general contexts is debatable. For example, I play a series of games called Assassin's Creed which take place in the middle ages. The games are historical fiction, but they do contain a number of actual historical figures and events. In parts of the game you get notes and if you choose to read them you get actual historical facts about these figures that you are working with or against.

Everyone plays for different reasons. I wouldn't go to an xbox game for learning; I go there for recreation purposes, any learning is incidental. I have seen "edutainment" games where they are designed to teach language, or math, and I think those are not very well designed in most cases - the gaming is incidental or force on.

I have played learning games for college though. When I was in a supply chain management course for instance, we broke up into groups, and we have certain variables in the game that were given to us, and certain formulas to calculate values, and then we could go into the game and set buying of raw materials, manufacturing, shipping and retail and the goal was to maximize profit. Once you started the game there were no resets, so you had to go with the flow and re-adjust your policies, outputs, routes, and cash as needed. That was an interesting experience - in addition to Supply chain management it taught me to be patient ;-)Apostolos K. Badges can be nice, but what can kids DO with what they have done....or is it purely playing and no learning? Nothing against that either, I'm just curious since I'm not coming near the stuff....Apostolos K. ("AK")https://www.blogger.com/profile/02198465120131968928noreply@blogger.com
