RE: learning styles, the best way i hav found to make ss less dogmatic about it is to
A. Introduce SEVERAL diff learning styles, like the Felder one, and Gardner's multiple intelligences
B. Have a convo about our similarities and differences and how those affect our learning and teaching in diff contexts, and how it affects how we learn together

I love how u've leveraged students' native language :)Apostolos K. I share those before the class starts, during week 1, and I keep referencing back to them throughout the semester. I tell students that I have a copy printed out on my desk for when I am grading their discussions, so they should have a copy on the desk before they hit submit ;-) Despite this, some people don't "catch on" until week 5 (of 13) :-/Apostolos K. There were criteria for min. 2 posts, for quality of contribution and for weaving in contribution of others (can't remember exact wording). When I used the rubric in a nationally diverse group, some students needed quite a lot of backchannel support. Interestingly, it was based on a scheme I had used to assess contributions to face to face seminars. I found that discussion of rubrics at the start of a module was useful, not just for the mechanics of assessment but also for discussion of the learning ethos I was trying to promote.Apostolos K.
